Recently the Secretary of State for Business and Skills visited Peak Scientific as part of a day visit to Glasgow.

Peak Scientific are a 3 times winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category. They specialise in designing and manufacturing sophisticated and bespoke gas compression equipment for use in reasearch laboratories and hospitals.

Vince Cable met Robin MacGeachy (MD) who gave him a tour of the factory and gave him the story behind Peak’s success.

Openness and trust are vital to the Peak philosophy.

A set of values were developed in 1997 which still hold firm today:

  • Respect the Individual – customer, supplier, colleague
  • Freedom with Responsibility
  • Restless – constantly striving for improvement
  • Fun & Passion – pride & enjoyment in what we do

Future

After many years of hard work which saw Robin catching early flights all over the globe the past 10 years have seen big growth in the company. Confidence has multiplied and innovation is very much encouraged.  It has become the norm to try something new. If it works - great, if not and mistakes were made - as long as they learned something from the experience this also was progress.

Growth has become the norm, at a pace, which was and is still occassionally challenging to manage at times.  However the results of working smart, being reactive to market conditions, making quick decisions and empowering the Peak staff speak for themselves.

The future business model of Peak remains the same, just on a larger scale. Starting in 1997 with 30 employees and growing to 270 staff in 2014, Peak now have offices in 14 countries. The growth continues but the ethos remains the same. Robin says;

By not outsourcing our design or manufacturing, by not compromising on the quality of our mechanical parts, by being committed to meeting customer needs and by delivering an unrivalled after sales service, anywhere on the planet, Peak continues to enjoy success globally.

Initiatives such as free fruit, recreation room, and pizza days are among many popular perks that have been implemented over time as has engaging a company doctor to help staff fitness and wellbeing.

Their job adverts sum it up perfectly:

We are a wee bit special.
