Midstream Lighting is a fast-growing technology company. We design, develop and manufacture proprietary high-power floodlighting systems based on LED technology. And we now generate our income primarily from the sale of our floodlighting equipment to end-users or installation partners – globally.
Our main growth and international trade have come from market sectors that demand an exceptionally reliable lighting system for mission-critical applications. These sectors include airports, marine terminals, other types of transportation hubs, sports stadia, and horticulture.
The lion's share of our orders is derived from project-specific work for our clients, be they a military base in Spain, a container port in Los Angeles, or a tennis club in New Zealand.
Why did you apply for a Queen's Award for Enterprise?
Since 2018 our turnover has continued to grow organically at 70% year on year. This expansion has been achieved by increasing the number of companies we export our lighting systems to. Our client base now includes companies in over 50 countries. We’ve also grown trade by opening up new markets as well as launching a number of new product series to meet our clients’ demanding needs.
As a child, our co-founder Yuli Grig saw a Queen’s Award logo on a packet of Vitabiotics Vitamins and set a mental target to win this award one day. And when Midstream became the success it is today, we decided to apply for this award quite simply because we believed we could and should win it.
As the world’s No.1 specialist and pioneer in LED lighting, with an impressive growth record especially in world-wide exports, we had the facts and figures to back our application. The award panel obviously thought so too.
What did it mean to win a Queen's Award for Enterprise?
Winning such a prestigious award gives our brand a significant reputation and credibility around the world. It also gives us a fascinating story to our global prospects and customers. They love the fact that a relatively small business like ours can win top awards, like the Queen’s Award, not just once but twice. We can’t stress how much it’s given our status a massive boost.
For staff, distributors, and anyone involved in our growth, winning an award that recognises your hard work is great energiser and morale booster. It’s also very comforting to have external recognition that your company is heading in the right direction. It’s great to be part of a winning team!
Winning awards like this has a real net benefit to the business especially when it comes to inspiring confidence in our brand for our partners, suppliers, prospects, and clients. This award also grabs the attention of everyone else who’s been involved in our journey. And the kudos of winning this award will help our international sales grow considerably.
Do you have any advice for future applicants?
Our advice to any company thinking of applying for a Queen’s Award would be to go for it. As long as they have a great story to tell, there’s no reason any company, in any industry, shouldn’t apply. Previous winners have come from all sorts of markets and backgrounds. So, have faith in what you do and the results your work has achieved for the country – then lead with that in your application. Carefully check the criteria for the award you’re entering and take plenty of time to plan your application. When you win a Queen’s Award it elevates your company to a new status. It has for us.
